The Senda Verde de Lloreo (Lloreo Green Way) runs along an old mining route that has become a quiet path among vegetation, tunnels, and industrial memory. A simple, green, and very accessible route to discover the friendliest landscape of Mieres.
The Senda Verde de Lloreo is one of the most pleasant routes in the Mieres council for those looking for a comfortable trip, without large slopes and with a strong connection to the mining history of the valley. Its layout takes advantage of part of an old infrastructure linked to coal transport, now transformed into a pedestrian itinerary that allows you to walk among nature, industrial heritage, and small rural landscapes.
The route takes place in the surroundings of Lloreo, within the municipality of Mieres, and has a clearly accessible character. The route we worked on has an approximate distance of 8.6 kilometers, with a very gentle slope, around 60 meters positive and negative, and an altitude that ranges approximately between 174 and 223 meters. Due to its characteristics, the difficulty is considered low, making it an ideal option for families, occasional walkers, or people who want to enjoy a quiet route.
As it is a green path, the itinerary has a very friendly profile. It does not seek great peaks or demanding climbs, but proposes a slow way to travel through the territory, following old steps linked to mining activity and the valley’s landscape. The path allows you to enjoy a recovered natural environment, where vegetation has gradually enveloped tunnels, bridges, embankments, and old railway sections.
One of the most representative elements of the route are its tunnels, which recall the industrial past of the area. Walking through these passages gives the route a special character, almost like a trip through Mieres’ mining memory. Where coal-related infrastructure once circulated, today the visitor finds a space for walking, silence, and contact with nature. This transformation is one of the keys to the appeal of the Senda Verde de Lloreo.
The itinerary also allows you to discover elements such as the Puente del Setal, one of the most recognizable references of the path. These types of structures help to understand how the territory was adapted to facilitate transport and industrial activity, overcoming slopes and connecting work areas. Today, these remains are integrated into the landscape as witnesses of an era that deeply marked the identity of the valley.
Throughout the route, the path alternates wooded areas, open zones, and small panoramas towards the rural and mountainous surroundings. The vegetation provides shade and coolness, especially in the warmer months, while clearings allow you to observe the relationship between the path, the hillsides, and nearby centers. It is not a route with great viewpoints, but it does offer a very close reading of the Mieres landscape.
The route runs through a territory where nature and industrial memory coexist in a very balanced way. That combination makes the Senda Verde de Lloreo especially interesting for those who want to walk without difficulty, but with content. Each stretch of the path allows you to imagine the old life of the valley: the movements, the mining activity, the service roads, and the subsequent recovery of these spaces for public use.
The surroundings of La Perea, La Vega San Pedro, and other points on the route add variety to the tour. These are quiet places, linked to the daily landscape of Mieres, where the hiker can enjoy an atmosphere very different from that of more demanding mountain routes. Here the pace is different: slower, more familiar, and more focused on observing the small details of the path.
As it is a linear type of route, the tour allows you to organize the walk as a round trip or plan the return according to the needs of each visitor. This condition makes it flexible and easy to adapt to the available time. It can be done completely or in sections, which increases its utility as a walk for different profiles of the public.
The approximate duration is between 3 and 5 hours, depending on the pace, stops, and whether the full round trip is taken. In any case, it is a route that invites you not to be in a hurry. The most recommended thing is to move forward calmly, stop in the tunnels, observe the elements of the old railway line, and enjoy the environmental recovery of a space that is part of the industrial history of Asturias.
The Senda Verde de Lloreo is perfect for those looking for a simple, accessible route with identity. Its greatest attraction is not in the difficulty or the altitude, but in the way it converts an old mining infrastructure into a natural and cultural route. It is an ideal itinerary to discover Mieres from a quiet, green perspective deeply linked to its workers’ memory, where each step remembers how the industrial landscape can be transformed into a space for walking, interpretation, and enjoyment.
