Peña Mea

From Pelúgano, the climb to Peña Mea leads to one of the most recognizable mountains in the Aller council, famous for its large natural window known as the Ojo de Buey (Ox Eye). A demanding, spectacular, and truly mountainous route.

The Peña Mea Route is one of the most emblematic ascents in Aller and one of the most unique mountain routes in central Asturias. Its main appeal lies not only in reaching the summit but in traversing a beautiful limestone landscape, passing through meadows, gaining altitude over the valley, and discovering one of the most well-known natural elements of the mountain range: the Ojo de Buey, a large rock opening that has become the iconic image of this mountain.

The route starts in the vicinity of Peḷḷuno / Pelúgano, a town located at the foot of Peña Mea. From the beginning, the route makes its mountainous nature clear. It is not a gentle stroll or a family path, but an ascent with significant elevation gain, intended for people accustomed to mountain hiking. The full route we worked on has an approximate distance of 10 kilometers, with a positive and negative elevation gain of around 910 meters, and an altitude ranging between 638 and 1,558 meters. Therefore, it is considered of high difficulty.

As you leave Pelúgano, the path ascends through meadows, traditional paths, and open hillsides. The landscape changes rapidly: the town is left behind, the valley opens up beneath your feet, and the rocky silhouette of Peña Mea gains presence. The mountain dominates the horizon with its imposing shape, and the hiker begins to perceive the scale of the journey. Each stretch of the climb offers new perspectives on the Aller council and the surrounding mountains.

One of the great attractions of the route is the approach to the Ojo de Buey, an impressive natural window located in the Peña Mea limestone massif. This rock arch is one of the most photographed points on the route and a place that is particularly striking due to its size, its location, and the landscape it frames. Reaching it is one of the most special moments of the route, as it combines geological beauty, a sense of height, and a strong visual identity.

Passing through the Ojo de Buey allows for a better understanding of the mountain’s limestone nature. The rock, shaped by erosion, creates unique forms that make Peña Mea more than just another summit; it is a landscape with its own personality. On this stretch, it is advisable to move with calm and attention, especially if the ground is wet or weather conditions are poor. On clear days, the views extend over much of the central Asturian mountain range, with the Aller council at your feet and a wide horizon of mountain ridges, valleys, and peaks. It is a first-class natural viewpoint, perfect for stopping, resting, and contemplating the landscape after the effort of the climb.

The return is made by the same path used for the ascent, so the route is considered linear according to the criteria we are using. The descent requires attention, especially on stretches of slope, rock, or uneven ground. After the effort of the ascent, it is best not to be overconfident and descend calmly, also taking the opportunity to enjoy the landscape from a different perspective.

The Peña Mea Route is ideal for experienced hikers or those in good physical condition looking for an authentic, demanding, and highly visual mountain route. Its combination of elevation gain, limestone landscape, panoramic views, and unique natural elements makes it one of the great proposals of Aller.
