Home of Afuega'l Pitu cheese, in the shadow of the sacred Monsacro

Morcín is easy to recognise: just look up. Mount Monsacro dominates much of the landscape and serves as a landmark for both local residents and first-time visitors. At its foot lie La Foz, Santolaya and other villages whose lives remain closely connected to the mountain, despite being only a few kilometres from the centre of Asturias. This proximity is one of Morcín’s defining features: in just a short time, you can leave the region’s main roads behind and find yourself on quiet local lanes, among villages, pastures and walking trails where life moves at a very different pace.

Climbing Monsacro is more than simply completing a hiking route. At the summit stand the chapels of Santiago and La Magdalena, linked to the tradition of the relics that were later taken to Oviedo. The ascent requires some effort, especially on the steepest sections, but it also helps explain why this mountain has held such historical and symbolic importance. The Peñerudes Tower, the Aramo Range and the surroundings of the Los Alfilorios Reservoir complete a municipality of striking contrasts, where visitors can hike, cycle or simply wander through its villages without every outing becoming a major expedition.

Morcín’s identity is also reflected in its cuisine. La Foz is closely associated with Afuega’l Pitu cheese and the annual competition that brings together producers and visitors to celebrate one of Asturias’ most distinctive flavours. Alongside turnip stew and traditional mountain cuisine, this cheese reflects a way of life rooted in livestock farming, artisan production and traditions that remain part of everyday life. Morcín has no need to exaggerate its attractions. It offers a mountain steeped in history, cuisine full of character and villages that have preserved their close-knit spirit. Its appeal lies precisely in that combination.
